SUNBURNT THROAT: Discovering Commonalities is a duo exhibit featuring two Calgary based Filipino artists, Harvey Nichol and Ryle Ramirez. The venue of this exhibit will be at cSPACE 1721 29 Ave SW Suite #125, Calgary AB. This show will highlight the brevity of life and our unspoken and mostly unrecognized bravery to live. SUNBURNT THROAT In the context of this exhibit is meant to be understood in a figurative approach. The direct translation for sunburnt throat can be taken literally, however limiting itself to a physical level of discomfort. “Sunburnt” is precisely defined by the consequences of the effect of sun rays on the human skin. However, in conjunction with the word “throat”, the concept of this exhibit is figuratively taken as the suppressed and halted voices of the marginalized community.
Historically speaking, most of the people that provide for the community have continued their work outside of the office desk. While contributing an essential need to society, their hard work continues to be minimized by the majority of our community. Sunburnt Throat evokes the importance of these people and their lack of acknowledgement within society. The conclusion of being sunburnt can also result in a catastrophic end if continued to be ignored. Internal struggles that continue to be unnoticed by society creates an unforgiving toll that will alter our perception for specific members of our community. The “prognosis” in this case is an illness of the whole, and to create a discernible change, everyone must be willing to accept the vulnerability of the consequences and preventive measures moving forward.
